World leaders hail Sharon; Palestinians call him ‘criminal’

While world leaders paid tribute on Saturday to former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon calling him a patriot who made “brave decisions,” Palestinians labeled him as a “criminal.”

Responses from Western leaders and Palestinian officials to the passing of Ariel Sharon have been mixed.

Mourning Sharon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sharon “was first and foremost a brave warrior and great strategist, among the greatest of Israel Defense Force commanders," Agence France-Presse quoted him as saying.

The Israeli President Shimon Peres, a former political ally of Sharon said “Arik was a valorous soldier and a bold statesman who contributed much to the security and building up of the State of Israel.”

“Arik loved his people, and his people loved him,” Peres said, using the nickname of Sharon.

He added: “He knew no fear and never feared pursuing a vision.”

Other than Israeli officials, the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Sharon would be remembered for “his political courage and determination to carry through with the painful and historic decision to withdraw Israeli settlers and troops from the Gaza Strip.”

Ban also called on Israel to “build on the late prime minister’s legacy of pragmatism to work towards the long overdue achievement of an independent and viable Palestinian state, next to a secure Israel.”

‘Sharon dedicated his life to Israel’

U.S. President Barack Obama said he joined Israelis in honoring Sharon’s commitment to Israel and affirmed traditional U.S. support for Israel’s security.

Obama and his wife Michelle sent their deepest condolences to Sharon’s family and to Israelis on “the loss of a leader who dedicated his life to the state of Israel,” Reuters reported.

“We reaffirm our unshakable commitment to Israel’s security and our appreciation for the enduring friendship between our two countries and our two peoples,” Obama said.

Bill Clinton, the U.S. former president and his wife Hillary, an ex-Secretary of State, said: “It was an honor to work with him, argue with him, and watch him always trying to find the right path for his beloved country.”

They added: “Ariel Sharon gave his life to Israel -- to bring it into being, to sustain and preserve it, and at the end of his long service, to create a new political party committed to both a just peace and lasting security.”

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said he will lead the U.S. delegation to the memorial service for Sharon.

Biden said he and his wife, Jill, were saddened to hear of Sharon’s death.

“We send our condolences to his family and to his beloved nation of Israel. I look forward to leading the U.S. delegation to his memorial service, to pay respects to the man and to pay tribute to the unshakeable partnership between the United States and Israel,” he added.

‘Israel lost an important leader’

British Prime Minister David Cameron also hailed Sharon for making “brave and controversial decisions in pursuit of peace, before he was so tragically incapacitated.”

“Israel has today lost an important leader,” Cameron said in a statement issued by Downing Street.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed his admiration for the late prime minister when he described Sharon as a “great political and military” figure.

Putin also said he has a “high esteem of the personal qualities of Sharon and his activities aimed at defending the interests of Israel.”

Palestinians celebrate his death

For Palestinians, Sharon was considered a “criminal.”

In the Gaza Strip, Palestinians were handing out sweets to the passersby and motorists in celebration of Sharon’s death.

A senior official, who called Sharon a criminal, said the late prime minister was responsible for the mysterious death of the veteran Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.

“Sharon was a criminal, responsible for the assassination of Arafat, and we would have hoped to see him appear before the International Criminal Court as a war criminal,” Jibril Rajub, a senior official of the Fatah party said.

An Israeli commission also found Sharon as indirectly responsible for the massacre of hundreds by Israeli-allied Christian militiamen at the Sabra and Chatilla refugee camps in Lebanon in 1982 during Israel's war to root out Palestinian guerrillas.

Hamas, an Islamist movement that controls the Gaza Strip, also said that Sharon’s death was a “historic moment,” marking the “disappearance of a criminal whose hands were covered with Palestinian blood.”

“We have become more confident in victory with the departure of this tyrant (Sharon),” Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas spokesman said.

Abu Zuhri added: “Our people today feel extreme happiness at the death and departure of this criminal whose hands were smeared with the blood of our people and the blood of our leaders here and in exile.”

Wael Abu Youself, a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, told Reuters that “despite the settlements and wars that he launched against us, here and in Lebanon and with the war crime of Sabra and Shatila (camps), Sharon has departed and the Palestinian people remain on their land.”

When Sharon was Israel’s foreign minister in 1998, he urged his Jewish settlers to take over as much West Bank land as possible before a permanent territorial agreement with Palestinians.

“Everyone there should move, should run, should grab more hills, expand the territory. Everything that’s grabbed will be in our hands, everything that we don’t grab will be in their [Palestinian] hands,” he said.

Nicknamed “The Bulldozer,” Sharon fought in all of Israel’s major wars before embarking on a political career in 1973.

Jennifer McCarthy Pulls Gun From Vagina After Dispute Over Space Aliens: Cops

The ex-wife of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy was arrested Saturday after allegedly whipping a gun out of her vagina and threatening her boyfriend.

Jennifer McCarthy, 48, got into an argument with her 53-year-old lover about space aliens, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by The Smoking Gun. McCarthy left her Santa Fe residence, then came back and changed into lingerie. The outfit was accessorized by a silver handgun placed in her vagina, with which she began to have "inner course," [sic] according to the affidavit.

While cleaning the chamber, McCarthy reportedly posed the question, "Who is crazy, you or me?" before pulling out the gun and pointing it at her boyfriend's head, the Albuquerque Journal reported. The boyfriend told deputies he wrested the weapon away from her and put it first in the toilet, then the trash can.

Gawker's Tom Scocca was inspired to write a comedic take on the incident in the style of Cormac McCarthy.

She was in the doorway. She had stripped in there and dressed her body for the boudoir, soft ladyclothes baring flesh and something more, down at the forking of her legs. Hard nickelplate steel, the Smith & Wesson. Her hand was on it.
Whos crazy."

McCarthy was charged with aggravated assault on a household member.

Her LinkedIn profile describes her as an artist.

The Incredible Story of the Plane Crash Selfie

At first glance you might only notice the bright orange life vest the man in the photo is wearing, floating in the water. But after a moment, the image in the background becomes obvious — the tail of what appears to be a sinking airplane.

It's exactly what it looks like: a selfie by a plane crash survivor in the immediate aftermath of the accident.

Ferdinand Puentes, along with eight other passengers and a pilot, was on a routine tour flight run by Makani Kai Air on Dec. 11, according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser. Shortly after taking off from Kalaupapa Airport, passengers described a bang and subsequent engine failure. The pilot, Clyde Kawasaki, glided the plane onto the water and instructed the passengers to don life jackets, according to local news reports.

The Coast Guard reached the passengers after about 80 minutes, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board. The plane sank after about 25 minutes.

One passenger, Loretta Fuddy, director of the Hawaii Department of Health, died in the water after the crash. Officials are still trying to determine the cause of death.

Puentes posted the photo on his Facebook page on Dec. 31. He told khon2 that the pilot gave him a seat cushion to use as an extra flotation device. "Steel-toed boots, heavy work jeans, and long sleeve shirt. It was hard and exhausting to swim with all that," he said.

A dive team was eventually able to recover the company's Cessna 208 Caravan, a single-engine turboprop plane, from the Pacific Ocean. The engine will be shipped to the manufacturer for analysis.

Puentes, for his part, also told the local news station of the ordeal: "A lot of things seem petty now. Can't take things for granted."

Brazilian Man Sues Date-Ranking App Lulu

A Brazilian man is leading a legal charge against the creators of man-ranking app Lulu. Felippo de Almeida Scolari, a 28-year-old law student in Sao Paulo, claims the app violates Brazilian law. He filed a suit against the app in early December.
Scolari's suit likely influenced the Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office to launch a civil inquiry into Lulu and Facebook, escalating the issue. Scolari has already won one battle with Lulu. Since late December, when users try to log on in Brazil, they've seen this notice: "Lulu is on vacation, happy Christmas. We are renovating during the holidays and we will be back soon."
Lulu and its creator Alexandra Chong basically friend-requested controversy from the app's beginning, but this is the first time the app has encountered legal problems to the point of going offline for a prolonged period.
Quick review in case you missed the media hand-wringing about Lulu: it's a controversial app that lets people identified as female on Facebook rank people identified as male on Facebook, and isn't a nice service. It encourages women to assign number rankings to the guys they know, and provides a list of descriptive hashtags to flesh each profile out.
Male profiles are culled from Facebook, so even if someone's not ranked, if they have Facebook, they're probably on Lulu. There are complimentary hashtags, ranging from the benign (#Alwayshappy, #Smellsamazeballs) to the graphic (#Manscaped, #Pleasef***meiloveyou). Then there are the mean ones, like #Boring and #WearsEdHardy. Allegations about sexual performance are also candidly discussed on the app.
Whatever categories Scolari was assigned, he was incensed enough to bring the app temporarily to its gossipy knees (I guess he didn't read our article on how to game Lulu).
"It's a question of privacy on the Internet. I want to see the app no longer allowing people to comment anonymously and Facebook no longer giving personal details to any app," Scolari told Telegraph in an interview. "I want to see the app comply with Brazilian law."
This is a big problem for Lulu, since Brazil was the company's largest market. Lulu started in the U.S., but after it launched in Brazil in November 2013, the app became the most-downloaded in the country, beating Facebook and messaging app Whatsapp. Millions of women logged on to rank the men in their lives (and out of them).
At the end of December, after Scolari filed suit and the company learned of the inquiry, the Lulu team made changes. Lulu already allowed men to opt out of the app, but the company tweaked its terms so that men in Brazil had to actively affirm that they wanted to be reviewed by the app before they appeared on it.
Perhaps realizing that this change would essentially kill the app (how many men were going to agree to that?), Lulu went offline there shortly after.
Brazil's laws around social media are in flux, and the Brazilian Congress is expected to make some major legal reforms about technology and privacy, so it's not clear how Scolari's case will play out when it goes to court in March.
Either way, Lulu better tread more carefully or it may get a ranking of #NotConstitutional in other countries as it continues to expand.

Daniel Christie dies following king-hit punch!

The director of public prosecutions has been asked to examine whether the man charged with assaulting Daniel Christie on New Years Eve should be charged with murder, after the teenager died in hospital on Saturday.

The Christie family turned off his life support on Saturday afternoon at St Vincent's Hospital, where Daniel had been in a coma since he was attacked on New Year's Eve in Kings Cross.

"This is the saddest announcement we can possibly make – that Daniel is no longer with us. Today our beloved Daniel passed away in hospital surrounded by his family and friends," his family said in a statement.

"While no words can describe how crushed we are, Daniel fought courageously over the past eleven days which allowed everyone to say their farewells. It has also given us all strength and tightened even further the bond our family share."

His family said they would honour his giving spirit by donating his organs.

The attack, which left the 18-year-old with a fractured skull, had occurred just metres from the site where Thomas Kelly, also 18, was struck in 2012. Kelly later also died from head injuries, sparking a public outcry over alcohol-fuelled violence in Sydney.

The public furore has grown in the wake of the attack on Daniel a fortnight ago. Martial arts fighter Shaun McNeil is facing five assault charges from New Year's Eve.

NSW Attorney General Greg Smith expressed his sympathies to the families and said he had contacted the director of public prosecutions over the matter.

"I have spoken to the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions and asked him to closely examine this case with a view to determining if murder charges are appropriate in light of the evidence, and in light of the alleged offender’s reported martial arts experience," said Mr Smith in a statement.

"These incidents have focused community attention on alcohol-related violence, and the government will be working with police to make our streets safer. Last month I met with the Kelly family and I am giving careful consideration to their proposals."

McNeil, 25, was charged with assaulting Daniel, his brother Peter and three under-age boys all in 90 seconds in Kings Cross.

Police allege McNeil punched the boys on Victoria Street about 9pm who then ran and hid behind the Christie brothers who were walking down the street on their way to a nightclub to celebrate the new year.

McNeil allegedly punched Daniel, 18, once in the face using a closed fist. Daniel fell backwards and hit his head on the road, causing him to lose consciousness. Peter tried to throw himself between McNeil and Daniel but was also allegedly punched and suffered a cut lip.

Daniel was taken to St Vincents Hospital, where another man lay in the hospital's intensive care unit after being punched 25 times in the head earlier that night in an unrelated incident. It is understood that man has recovered from his injuries.

A week after Daniel's attack, 23-year-old Michael McEwen left St Vincents for a rehabilitation centre after spending a week in a coma fighting for his life after he was punched and stomped on at Bondi Beach.

The Christie family has described the blow that killed their rugby-mad son as the "coward's punch" and his death will add to the pressure on the O'Farrell government to take action to stem the violence on Sydney's streets during the peak summer drinking season.

King hit punches have claimed 91 lives since 2000, according to the Monash University's forensic medicine department. The study found NSW had the highest toll - with 28 victims.

In a public statement released on Saturday afternoon, Daniel's family paid tribute to him.

"Daniel was exceptional. He was a beacon of morality with a heart of gold. We are so proud of Daniel and will strive to live with the core values he possessed; respect, dignity, pride and integrity."

"He was someone who had faith in anyone, which in turn, inspired people to have faith in themselves. Daniel was so caring and encouraged people to be the best they could be."
